“Leigh Fatzinger is an expert in media insights, media literacy, and is serial entrepreneur…” (spoken with a soft, plummy accent)

I’m kidding. Personally, when people use illeism on their profile pages, it’s like cat claws on a chalkboard. Some psychologists claim talking about oneself in the third person can improve self-esteem. But with a last name like Fatzinger, I’ve taken enough punches to have pretty thick skin, and am comfortable talking about myself in the first. #AMA

This Substack exists for two reasons: news and books. Actually, three reasons. In high school, I would slyly sneak into my late father’s drawer in the morning, remove the spare change and singles, and use the money to buy newspapers and books. This can be verified by any number of my high school classmates. And with a last name like mine, believe me, they all remember.

As you can imagine, my father was pissed every time he caught me taking his change. At the same time, he was relieved I was using it to become media literate, rather than to buy beer and drugs (that money I actually earned). So reason number three for this Substack: I believe media literacy is one of the most important civic challenges (and responsibilities) of this decade. For me, writing on this topic is both penance for the angst I caused my wonderful parents all those years, as well as distraction for the karmic payback I fully expect to receive from my two growing sons.
